Striking a Balance During the Long School Holidays

In Kenya, most students enjoy nearly 13 weeks of school holidays between November and January. It’s a well-deserved break after a busy academic year — but for many struggling students, this period becomes a missed opportunity for growth.
Each year, we notice a recurring trend: parents often excuse students from additional academic support during this time, believing they need “rest.” While rest is important, the result is predictable — April and August become panic months, filled with rushed tuition and catch-up sessions to address the backlog and poor performance. Unfortunately, these shorter breaks rarely offer enough time to make meaningful progress.
As educators, we encourage parents to strike a healthy balance.
Allow children time to relax, recharge, and pursue hobbies.
But also dedicate structured time for review and targeted support in weaker areas.
Even a few hours a week of guided revision or skill-building can make a lasting difference in confidence and performance.
Learning is most effective when it’s consistent, not crammed. The goal isn’t to burden children — it’s to help them stay mentally active and prepared for the year ahead.
📘 At Raena Learning, we continue to see remarkable transformations in students who use their long holidays wisely — combining rest with purpose-driven learning.
